Welcome! I’m Charlie. I’m a writer and a doctoral candidate in English literature at Harvard.
I write mostly about literature, ideas, and higher education. My essays, reviews, and reporting have appeared in The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Atlantic, The Hedgehog Review, The Point, Public Books, Slate, The Nation, and many other publications.
I’m committed to strengthening the connections between the academy and the public. I strive to make ideas accessible and stimulating for the general reader without sacrificing nuance or complexity. Recently, I’ve been writing about work ethic, idleness, beauty, and intersections between academia and politics. I’ve become increasingly interested in labor and the history of economic thought.
I completed an MSc in History of Science, Medicine, and Technology at Oxford, where I studied on a Rhodes scholarship. Before that, I earned a BA in Political and Social Thought and in English from the University of Virginia.
